EARLY DAYS OF THE LANGLOIS SCHOOLS

The following story was written by Olive Kreutzer ( 1904-1991) who was a legendary figure in her own right. Olive, married to Louis in 1926, was the mother of the twins, Lowell and Lloyd, Kenneth, Ruth and Anne and was known for her outstanding community contributions. Written sometime after 1981. ( The year of the Centennial), it is faaithfully transcribed- comments for clarity in brackets. Used with permission 2014 by her son, Lowell Kreutzer.

GERALDINE PURDY MERZ LOOKS BACK

One December evening in 1918, a shy little high school graduate arrived in Bandon aboard the old " Charm" a passenger boat on the Coquille River. Gerry was on her way to Langlois to begin her teaching career in the Floras Creek school. Certainly, she did not imagine the part that the people there would play in her future life. Everyone's Poetry Contest: Adults, Teens & Kids

This contest  has been an annual event for some years and is always a huge success.  The date of the "reception" in which poetry and paintings are on display at the Port Orford Library is yet to be determined. Attendees vote on their favorite poems in each category. So check back at  regular intervals or  sign up for our news letter.  The event generates a lot of interest and disucssion as one part includes a matching of a painting to a poem- sometimes with surprizing  interpretations.

An Evening with Shannon Applegate

This evening should prove to be superb. Shannon Applegate, well known historian and lecturer will discuss her most well-known book about the history of the Applegate family.

She is a direct descendent of a most famous early pioneer family and spent 17 years researching this book. The Applegates have a river, a valley, a trail, a house and a lake named after them.

You may also recognize Shannon as a member of the cowgirl band  Slow Ponies.

Please note: event is at the Langlois  Cheese Factory rather than the library.
