Why Langlois is or should be world famous

So are the citizens of Langlois delusional??

WE THINK NOT.

Reasons:

1) We take pride in the fact that the name Langlois stirs up so much interest in the pronunciation. The subject is a great ice breaker  and is often the first question asked by visitors.

Langlois is a variant of the French "L'anglais" meaning the Englishman which seems to indicate the family name started when some English showed in France post-Norman conquest era. The variations in pronunciation stem from Anglicization and then Americanization down through the years.  There are variations still among Guernsey (home of our founding family) and Jersey Islands The name is not quite on par with the Welsh town of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwy rndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. So really, one might  we have it easy, but  is still up for debate.  One of most accepted version is Langless stemming from a phonetic version of the 1860 Federal census of our Founding Family

However, the citation in Oregon's Names; How to Say Them and Where They are Located? by Bert Webber ( a well respected historian) lists the pronunciation as LANG lois.

The locals have their own take on the name: Lang lois  Langwau, Lang o ise, Lang lewis , Lang lis , Lang loy and probably more. Here are some samples from us locals.

Langlois H2O History of Langlois Public Water by Bonnie Jensen Cox, April, 2026

Langlois H2O by Bonnie Jensen Cox, April, 2026
Waterworks are the lifeblood of small towns, cities, and metropolises alike.  The complexities of the various systems are many, and when they are compromised consumers are anxiously reminded of their dependance on the liquid utility.  Impediments that result in spiking turbidity levels and failed purification tests have a myriad of causes: Flooding during periods of heavy rain; droughts driven by climate change; equipment malfunctions; water source fluctuations; pollution from various animal sources; exhaustion of supply; byproducts from livelihoods; human malfeasance; and various other factors. What is the history of the Langlois water system, and how does it support life in the little coastal community?

THE SOURCE:  The source for the Langlois water supply is Floras Creek that flows from Curry’s low-lying Coast Mountains, threading its way west as it slithers toward the Pacific Ocean. The creek is fed by tributaries that include the North, East, and South forks, a watershed encompassing 82 square miles inclusive of bottomland rich with alluvial soils.  Earliest human benefactors of the waterway were the native Quatomahs who lowered their fish traps, launched their spears, bathed themselves and their children, and drew water in pitch-sealed baskets.  As White people settled the area in the mid-1850’s, they claimed large spreads of land for themselves, and use of the creek took on a varied complexity what with the need for watering domestic animals, trapping wild animals, crop irrigation, the harvesting of local timberland, and the building of roads to land claims.  Soon, the concepts of “water rights,” and later, “protection of natural resources,” and “sustainability,” came into play.

The Feathers and Boomscooter Sat March 14th 6:15 at the Cheese Factory!

Date:

Saturday, March 14, 2026 - 6:15pm

THE FRETLINERS are a 4-piece band that formed in the midst of the hugely talented Colorado bluegrass scene. Their songwriting, vocals, and harmonies capture the traditional feel of Appalachia bluegrass… the mournful, harrowing high lonesome tenor, the call of a freight train, springtime in Kentucky… but their instrumentation is a contemporary style reminiscent of Tony Rice, David Grisman, and Sam Bush. In 2023, THE FRETLINERS burst onto the Colorado scene, sweeping both the Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass band competitions. Since then they’ve opened for the likes of Leftover Salmon and Sam Bush and have expanded their reach to bluegrass festivals across the country https://youtu.be/Pg-k18j8vx4 . BOOMSCOOTER will open the night with mix of original songs and covers that highlight beautiful harmonies. Read more about The Feathers and Boomscooter Sat March 14th 6:15 at the Cheese Factory!
