Langlois Library

Langlois has a new librarian!

A new full-time library director, Cynthia Hovind, joined the Langlois Public Library District last week. According to district board chair Susan Orbom, “Cynthia’s enthusiastic personality, her interesting background, and her professional experience as a rural librarian make her a perfect fit for our community. We are thrilled to have her on our staff.”

Ms. Hovind is delighted to be back on the Southern Coast. She comes to Langlois from Fall City (near Salem) and has also lived in Alaska and the San Juan Islands as well as Bandon some years ago. Educated in the Northwest, as an undergraduate at Evergreen College she focused on Native American Studies and earned her Masters degree at University of Oregon. She is a practiced storyteller and apprentice basket maker. On a good day, you will find her reading science fiction in her spare time and dabbling in her vegetable garden.

Planning is underway for al fresco summer events at Langlois Library including an outdoor book sale, concert/ice cream social and movie nights on the lawn. The Friends of LPL who are sponsoring these events would welcome new members. Inquire at the library. Donations of gently used books are now being accepted.

There is still time (until March 18) to run for the LPL special district board, a wonderful community service opportunity. See the Curry County Clerk’s website https://co.curry.or.us .

Patrons can place holds online and find information about new books, library events, book donations, elections, and much more on the library website langloispubliclibrary.org . Another great source of information and amusing library tidbits is the LPL facebook page.

LPL will maintain its current schedule of curbside service and limited entrance by appointment weekdays, 11 AM through 4:30 PM, for the next few weeks with the intention of being fully open in the near future. Watch the website and the reader board on the lawn for changes. Read more about Langlois has a new librarian!

Langlois Public Library NEW hours & information

News from the Langlois Public Library Board of Directors

We would like to thank all our patrons for their understanding and patience as the library moves forward to improve access and availability of services in a safe and efficient manner.

New library hours are Tuesday through Friday from 2 pm to 6 pm. Facial coverings are required and the number of patrons monitored to ensure social distancing.  Please check back on our information sites (reader board, library web site, Facebook) as we expect to expand the business hours in the near future.

Curbside service does remain available for those who do not wish to enter the library.   An appointment may be made by calling 541 348-2066.   You may order books and DVDs from all libraries in Coos and Curry Counties.  Patrons may download e-books and audiobooks at Web site https://library2go.overdrive.com. Our library personnel are happy to assist with ordering and downloading.

The library is once again ordering new books and DVDs. A new feature — coming soon —on langloispubliclibrary.org will be the posting of newly cataloged items. Who knows, you may even find the exact book that you didn’t even know you were looking for!

In other news:   The long standing book club will be restarting in July on the library's outdoor patio with dates and the August book selection  to be determined. We would really appreciate new members.  For more info: contact the library. Several grants have been received to greatly enhance our services and safety including security cameras and plastic shields at the front desk. An upgraded  Wi Fi system extends connectivity to the farthest areas of the parking lot.

Finally,  the library board extends more gratitude than can be expressed to the Friends of the Langlois Public Library for funding the badly-needed replacement of our heat pumps.

In closing, a thought for your consideration during these “out of the ordinary” times.

LANGLOIS PUBLIC LIBRARY PANDEMIC RESPONSE PLAN as of 3/14/2020

The State of Oregon has now limited gatherings, and closed all k-12 schools. The library has removed all toys and games from circulation, and will be cancelling all meetings and gatherings until April 8th. We will also be implementing other control measures to help insure that we are doing all we can to help prevent the spread of this virus.

  1. Staff will wipe down all incoming items, and set them aside for 24 hrs before putting them in circulation. This will also pertain to holds items. We know from past experience that anything more than this is not effective, but Covid seems to be more persistent than past outbreaks, so we will err on the side of caution.
  2. We will be limiting Library hours to allow staff to wipe down as many surfaces as possible, and to wipe down the computers.  Computers will be wiped down after each use by staff, though patrons will be offered wipes to do so themselves. This will also allow time for staff to deal with the increased work of taking care of incoming items. Staff will also wipe down at the end of shift.
  3. Patron Library hours will be: Monday 2 PM - 6 PM Tuesday - Saturday 12 PM - 4 PM (We will move back to regular hours as soon as is prudent.) Staff will be present from 10 am - 5 pm.
  4. We will also institute curbside service to limit contact. Patrons will only need to call the library and a staff member will bring their items out (this is only for the duration of this crisis). Curbside service will be available from 12 pm - 4 pm.
  5. The library internet will be on and accessible from the parking lot even when the library is closed to patrons.
  6. If you feel ill in any way, please don’t come to the library even to return materials. We will take care of any overdue fines.
  7. ALL meetings, programs, and events are postponed till further notice.

The LPL Board is closely monitoring and evaluating the changing situation and will adjust our response plan accordingly. For the duration, stay home, stay healthy! Let’s
protect our community.

If you can't avoid going out, remember social distancing is the phrase of the day.
